Valiant Green Company

The Valiant Green Company (2012) is a spirited march inspired by the rich traditions of the American military march style, with a special homage to the country of Ireland. While composing, I envisioned the lush green landscapes of the Irish countryside, dotted with clovers swaying in the breeze, and lively gatherings where people danced vibrant Irish jigs.

At the heart of this piece lies a nod to one of Ireland’s most beloved melodies, the “Londonderry Air.” Known worldwide, this timeless tune is perhaps best recognized with the lyrics of “Danny Boy.” Its poignant beauty provided a central theme around which this march was crafted.

The creation of this piece carried an unexpected but fitting coincidence. It was commissioned by the “Green” Band Association, whose ensemble—like a “valiant company” of musicians—premiered the work at the Performing Arts Center of John F. Kennedy High School. The connections ran even deeper: President John F. Kennedy, the school’s namesake and the 35th President of the United States, was of Irish descent.

The title, The Valiant Green Company, reflects not only the lush green imagery of Ireland but also the unity of the musicians who brought this composition to life.
